If I Can’t Have You, a new old taste of Shawn Mendes
Shawn Mendes got on the treadmill and released a brand new song; “If I Can’t Have You.”
The “In My Blood” singer announced “If I Can’t Have You” and dropped its video in black and white that somehow brings out his smile and captivating stare even more.
“If I Can’t Have You” marks Shawn’s first release for 2019 following “Lost In Japan,” which was released almost a year ago. The man has been busy touring the world and putting up shows all over the place and still found the time to write 45 songs, including this one which was originally meant for Dua Lipa as he told Zane Low on Beats 1. He called Dua about it but after a few runs (Possibly on that treadmill) in the studio, he decided to keep it for himself as it feels like the sound he’s heading towards.
“It’s a confident pop record, and it’s clearly that for me, I am going through this phase right now where I’m testing out all the styles of music that I can possibly be doing. And pop is what is in my blood, no pun intended. In the last six months, I wrote about 45 songs, and they’re all over the place and different vibes, and this is the one that consistently, every single time I played it, was just giving people that smile.”
The whole thing happened via FaceTime as Shawn revealed he was in the dressing room of Saturday Night Live with Adam Sandler getting some wigs fitted.
“If I Can’t Have You” strays away from the previous two tracks Shawn released and labels as serious.
“I just went through a really serious run with ‘In My Blood’ and ‘Lost In Japan,’ feeling super mature. I wanted people to remember that I can still create a song that’s just a feel-good record. The point of music is not to be so serious all the time; sometimes it’s just to feel good.”
Evidently, it’s a feel-good song in all its aspects; from the lyrics to the sound to the video which sees Shawn going from a couch in front of a fake Toronto background then going barefoot to a piano where he serenades the camera a bit before jumping in front of a mic, strolling past a choir and finally ending the thing on a treadmill.
Shawn also revealed that he is working on new music and will be in the studio for the next three weeks and has yet to finish his 100-date tour.
On the weekend, Saturday Night Live viewers got a taste of Mendes when he performed “If I Can’t Have You” as well as one of its predecessors, “In My Blood.”
We will be waiting for Shawn’s new work very impatiently to find out who will be featured on the album.
