Mulan is revealed and I’m relieved
Disney has revealed Liu Yifei as Mulan for the live action reboot of the animated movie.
I’m one of those kids who grew up to Disney and Mulan has always been one of my favorites until recent years where the fighter (princess) became my ultimate favorite (after watching and re-watching). So naturally, when I heard that a live-action version of the film is in the making, I got super anxious because it’s always a huge hit or a major miss with this type of movies. Thankfully, Disney hasn’t disappointed yet with its remakes.
A few days ago, the actress set to be playing Mulan was revealed after auditions took place across 5 continents and with more than a 1000 candidates; Liu Yifei landed the job. The picture revealing the actress shows Liu in burgundy robes looking fierce and ready for battle while preparing to swing a sword.
Director Niki Caro revealed that the remake won’t be loyal to the animated version but more to the original story of the girl who fought in the Imperial Army to save the life of her sick father. Caro axed all the songs as she has a different vision for the movie revealing it to be “a big, girly martial arts epic that will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving.” Beloved Mushu also doesn’t appear on the cast list but maybe someone is filling in his shoes.
The cast also includes Jet Li as the emperor, Jason Scott Lee as the villain (Bori Khan), Yoson An as Mulan’s love interest, and Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, who may or may not be Mulan’s mentor. The movie, keeping its original title, Mulan, isn’t set for release until March 2020 with filming taking place in China and New Zealand so we have time to anticipate and re-watch the 1998 Mulan again and again.
